FAQs, Turning 16 in California
Do California chains require ID for the free birthday drink at age 16?
16-year-olds in California can claim every non-alcoholic birthday freebie at national chains. Birthday drink offers are gated to 21+, so they don't apply at this age.
Are there California-specific birthday freebies that don't exist nationally?
Yes. California chains layer state-wide programs (In-N-Out, Panda Express, See's Candies) on top of every national birthday freebie. ID is required at most full-service restaurants for any age-gated drink offer. These regional offers stack on top of the national chain birthday programs, so a typical California birthday haul is bigger than what a national-only checklist suggests.
